David Jonason

“I believe images of the Southwest are as iconic as the Statue of Liberty. The gaping canyons, the cacti, the cliff dwellings and red buttes – these spectacular locations are so familiar to us.  They’re intrinsic to how we see and think of ourselves as Americans.”

David Jonason

From: California | Medium: Oil on canvas

Artist David Jonason utilizes his keen artistic, talent and combines his a love of architecture, landscape and design to create evocative paintings that transcend the angles and shapes of his subject scenes – unadulterated nature itself. Mr. Jonason’s describes his innovative style as “contemporary cubism” – dashes of light and color that emphasize the physical geometry of Southwest. He integrates elements of Cubism and Realism into the distinctive lines of American desert locales. He depicts the strong cloud and rock forms with a dramatic application of color. His canyons and buttes celebrate the grandeur of nature.

A native of Los Angeles, Jonason now lives in Mendocino. His style of painting, developed in the early 20th Century, reduced elemental structures and forms to depict them through a combination of abstraction and realism, with often sharply defined geometrical forms. Jonason’s exciting red rock vistas and “skyscapes” convey a powerful sense of the American spirit, of limitless possibility and boundless opportunity. The Marshall Gallery of Fine Art in Scottsdale, AZ, is pleased to represent David Jonason and his stunning works.

Artist Statement

“The American Southwest has the biggest skies, the ‘reddest’ rocks, the most dramatic spires and buttes. Of all landscapes, I love the desert the most.  It represents to me the grandeur of nature, a sense of peace and serenity.  The stark angular qualities of the Colorado Plateau in particular seem to easily lend themselves to cubist interpretations. I believe images of the Southwest are as iconic as the Statue of Liberty. The gaping canyons, the cacti, the cliff dwellings and red buttes – these spectacular locations are so familiar to us.  They’re intrinsic to how we see and think of ourselves as Americans.”
