John Berry

the duality in nature which is expressed in color and form

John Berry

From Nevada – Lives in Utah|Medium: Oils & Mixed Media

John Berry’s love of nature began when he was a child, growing up in the desert areas surrounding Sparks, Nevada. He spent his young years chasing coyotes and jackrabbits through the sagebrush. As a youth, hiking and fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains refined his love and appreciation of nature. John’s artistic talent began to emerge in high school where he portrayed the environments of his native Nevada. While still in school, his art was displayed in a number of local exhibits and venues. As a junior, he won the Sierra Nevada Museum of Art competition. It was at that point that John decided painting was how he wanted to spend his life.

Artist Statement

Duality is the main idea behind my work. Who are we really? There is so much to each one of us. Many things that are visible. Many more that are hidden. I like to think my work represents both the seen and unseen in each of our lives, the duality of our nature. Experiences mold us. DNA shapes us. We may have scars on the surface or beneath. The paths that we have tread play into whom we may become. Imperfections, beliefs and biases all contribute. Using color, pattern, line and texture my work strives to capture what it is to be human.  To live with a dual nature of spirit and body, imperfections included.
