Fred Calleri

From California | Medium:Oil paintings

Born in Maryland, Fred Calleri has been interested in art all his life. A gifted draftsman since childhood, his early influences were Renaissance painters and early 20th century Masters. Fred worked in illustration and graphic design at The Maryland Institute College of Art from 1988-93. The excellent training opened the window to all fields of fine art. Ironically, Fred took only one painting class in college (the smell of turpentine made him ill) and he only became seriously interested in painting professionally after the birth of his son in 1997.

By studying artists like Vermeer, Zorn, Sorolla, Sargent and contemporary living masters, Calleri aims to reproduce the masters’ palettes and moods in classically rendered, romantic images. He seeks to create an emotional response using nostalgic subjects and regional representation. As he explores different paths, the figures resonate and come to life in each piece. In exploring the figure and, indeed, representational painting in general Calleri found he was free to let the images take him where they want to go by adding slight distortions. Calleri seeks to imbue his subjects with a romantic and mysterious, enigmatic quality. The work has evolved into a smooth blend of representational and quirky distortion; the effort to create a deeper narrative within the works has led in some cases to humorous caricature and ironic commentary in others.

The historical, “period” nature of the works lends itself to his distinctive style and reaches back to a seemingly simpler time. Fred’s themes resonate with casual observers and collectors alike. Using vintage reference photos, live models, and imagination, Fred subjectss are instantly recognizable as his creations. Currently, Fred uses each piece as a lesson. His goal for each painting varies and may derive from mood, palette, light or expression. For example, the artist may study Sargent’s color palette, or Vermeer’s light, pattern or composition. Thus, he garners a lesson from a master to point him onward. The highly individual results are as pleasing as they are collectible.
